Biography

By training, Julian is a researcher in mathematics. He came to Exeter for a postdoctoral research position in the University of Exeter and has several years' experience of teaching university students (individuals, small groups, and a course with over 180 students), but also some experience of tutoring at GCSE level.

Julian enjoys engaging people with mathematics at any level and does not view people's difficulties with the most basic-level maths any less empathetically than university students' difficulties with undergraduate mathematics.

He is able to tutor mathematics at any level, from primary and secondary school exams, as well as pure mathematics at first and second-year undergraduate level.

'I believe that when students are having trouble with a maths problem, the task of the tutor is to identify all the individual specific points where the student is having difficulty with the concepts involved. It is crucial to build a good foundation in the understanding of mathematical methods from the onset. There is absolutely no shame in having trouble with concepts that you were taught at a much earlier stage in your mathematics education than the stage that you're meant to be studying for now.'
